Curling
in Los Angeles
Curling
has arrived to the hot and sunny Southern California. Hollywood
Curling Club was formed in November 2007 by a group
of Swedish expatriates.
Curling
is a team ice sport somewhat similar to bocce. The players
slide 40 pounds heavy granite rocks aiming for a circular
target. Teammates sweep the ice in front of the sliding
rock in order to direct the movement of the rock. The sweepers'
brooms create friction which melts small bumps in the ice
surface. Fewer bumps in the ice allow the rock to slide
further. The team that places most rocks in the house scores
extra points.
This
sport of skill and strategy is not entirely new to Southern
California but this is the first time curlers have a home
in Hollywood. Panorama City ice skating rink is the new
home of Hollywood Curling Club.
